Week 5 Discussion Question

In the chapter "Scars" (pages 174-177) we learn about a ritual from Sudan that symbolizes becoming a man in Kek's tribe. Why do you think Kek is so upset that he "will never have the gaar?" Ganwar tells him the scars mean nothing in America, but Kek is still very upset. Kek also tells Ganwar he doesn't think he has shown himself to be brave, Ganwar disagrees. Do you think Kek has shown bravery, yes or no? Explain your thinking. Use examples from the story to support your answer.

Week 4 Discussion Question

Kek has now found a job working on Lou's farm and spending time taking care of Gol the cow. He describes this on pages 136 and 137 in the section "Working." How has this new job helped Kek feel better about life in America? Most of us might think talking to a cow and treating a cow so well is 'weird' but this is normal for Kek and he enjoys it. What is Kek's connection to Gol the cow? Why has she become such an important part of his life? Use examples from your reading to support your thinking.

Week 3 Discussion Question

In the section "Once There Was..." Kek is feeling many things about attending school. He is excited because "to go to school and learn is a fine honor." But he is also worried because "I don't know so many things. I don't even know what I don't know!" What from this section helps us to understand why Kek thinks school is such a 'fine honor?' Do we feel the same way about school in the U.S., why or why not? What does Kek mean by "I don't even know what I don't know!?" Make sure to use details from the story to support your answer. Week 2 Discussion Question

We begin to learn a little about Kek's life and his family. Kek has strong feelings about his brother Lual in the chapter called "Brother." He tells us that sometimes Lual scolded him, like his father, and teased him, but that he "would give all the beds in all the great world to feel the sharp thorn of Lual's scolding once again." If his brother was so mean to him why does he miss him so much? What can you infer happened to his brother? How do you think this changes Kek?
