Week 2 Discussion Question

We begin to learn a little about Kek's life and his family. Kek has strong feelings about his brother Lual in the chapter called "Brother." He tells us that sometimes Lual scolded him, like his father, and teased him, but that he "would give all the beds in all the great world to feel the sharp thorn of Lual's scolding once again." If his brother was so mean to him why does he miss him so much? What can you infer happened to his brother? How do you think this changes Kek?

  1. Why I think that Kek misses his brother so much is because he misses him teasing him and having fun with him. I think this because he is probably used
to him being mean to him and misses that feeling a lot. What I infer happened to Lual is that he injured but still alive. I think this because he would probably go with Kek to America if he was not injured. If he was dead then they would probably tell Kek that he died and if he is injured and alive they can’t tell Kek that he is dead or alive because do not know. This changes Kek because he is worrying about Lual and when Lual was fine was not worrying about. Also, it changes Kek because he does not know what has happened to him and at home he did what was happening to him.

    1. I like how you got me interested but when you said you think he might be alive just injured it said clearly in the text that Kek had ''lost him'' like in the dream everybody was lost to the devil even his brother the only others to survive where him his mom and his cousin Ganwar

  2. Kek misses his brother because it his family member and Kek plays around with him. This changes Kek because he is usually used to his brother being at his house. He probably plays with him every single day and his brother probably helps Kek with his homework. I can infer that Kek’s brother died in the war because they haven’t seen him for a long time.

  3. Why I think that Kek’s brother meant so much to him is because Kek’s brother made Kek have strong feelings. When they would play together they would enjoy their time together. I inferred that his brother was trying to fight the men with guns and got killed just like Kek’s dad. I think this changes Kek because he doesn’t get to have fun with family and be happy with his brother.

    1. I really think you're right Jake but how would his brother sneak up on a guy and tried to beat and kill him what if the Nazi's took him and his dad and kill them.

    2. Why Kek misses his brother so much is because soldiers attacked his village and imprisoned him and killed His brother and his dad. Why his brother was so mean too him is because
he just wanted Kek too learn and grow in life.

  4. Kek misses his brother so much even though he was mean to him. Lual is family even though he was mean to Kek he still loved him. I think Lual was shot when someone was shooting from the planes back in Africa. What this changes about Kek is that he was destroyed when his brother and father died and he was happy he wasn’t being teased or scolded. Now, Kek wants to be teased and scolded by his brother.

  5. Why I think Kek misses his brother so much is because he is family even though he is mean to Kek. Therefore that's why I think Kek misses his brother in my first reason. Another reason I think Kek missed his brother Laul is because even though he scolded he and his brother always had fun with each other even if it is in a weird way like it is to others like how Kek put snakes in his brother's bed to get him back for teasing him . My last but not least reason is that Kek loves his brother even though his brother doesn't treat him as well. Yet his brother is still family and they both love each other even if they don't express it. What I think happened to his brother was how in the book described men with guns and he said every time he remember his brother to remember that dreadful night that he lost his brother and his dad to the men in the Sky with guns. It also said this when he saw his cousin ''He stopped himself from looking at the one last scar, the scar that the night it happened he lost his brother and father to the men in sky with guns,''. I think the men in the Sky with guns shot his brother that he loved very much even though even though he teased him and he was mean to Kek. That is what I think happened to his brother.

  6. Why Kek misses his brother so much is because soldiers attacked his village and imprisoned him and killed his brother and his dad. Why his brother was so mean to him is because
he just wanted Kek too learn and grow in life. Now Kek just wishes his brother was alive too tease him again. This changes Kek because he used to be the person who loves teasing his brother and now he is all calm and he is really sad and does not really talk about what happened in Africa.
