Week 3 Discussion Question

In the section "Once There Was..." Kek is feeling many things about attending school. He is excited because "to go to school and learn is a fine honor." But he is also worried because "I don't know so many things. I don't even know what I don't know!" What from this section helps us to understand why Kek thinks school is such a 'fine honor?' Do we feel the same way about school in the U.S., why or why not? What does Kek mean by "I don't even know what I don't know!?" Make sure to use details from the story to support your answer. Really explain what you think.

  1. From this section it helps us to know why Kek thinks school is such a fine honor
is because in his old school they didn't have all the fancy desks and chairs. They only had dirt to write and he had to sit on the ground. So when he says it’s such an honor is because he doesn’t have a lot at his old home so he thinks it’s amazing to have all this fine stuff. We don’t feel the same way in the U.S. because we pretty much expect it and don’t care for school. I also think that we should all appreciate school like Kek. Kek shows us to accept what we have and to be grateful for what we have. What Kek means by "I don't even know what I don't know!” Is he knows what he is supposed to know in Africa, but he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to know in the U.S.

  2. When Kek says that school is such a fine honor I think he means that it so special to have a school that has all the materials. At his old school, they probably did not have a lot of things to use to learn so it is an honor to have this stuff. Also, according to the text it says that Kek thinks to go to school is a fine honor. We probably do not feel the same way about school in the U.S. because we are used to having all this stuff and learning with it. Also, in other countries they do not have a lot of stuff, but we do so we’re not used to not having what we need to learn. What I think Kek meant when he said, “I don’t even know what I know,” is that he does not remember the stuff he has learned so he does not know what he knows. Also, he is from a different country so he does not know what he is going to learn in America.

  3. Kek thinks school is a fine honor to him because at his other home there was a war on and he couldn't go to school basically all the time. At his new school the stuff is free like he doesn't have to pay for desks and pencils and he had a voucher to get free food to eat. He looks at school as fun learning time and for us it doesn't feel like gold and that not all kids take school seriously. What Kek mean by "I don't even know what I don't know!?" is that sometimes school is hard and that he needs to learn a lot to be a good student and get good grades.

  4. Why Kek thinks it's such a fine honor too go too school is because he gets too learn and meet new friends but it is also a bad idea because he doesn't really know much but English and the other kids might make fun of him because he is from a different culture and like tease him because he is a different color. What we feel in the U.S. is not really excited as Kek because all that learning and in fourth grade you only get on recess on less your testing you get on in the afternoon. What Kek means by ‘’I don’t even know what I don’t know is he is scared of being made fun of by the other kids because he does not know that much stuff.

  5. Kek is saying school is a fine honor because back in Africa school didn’t really happen or they didn't have school there. What Kek means by I don’t know what I don’t know is he doesn't know that much. Here in the U.S we don’t feel the same because we know what we know we just don’t know what it is called.
