Week 5 Discussion Question

In the chapter "Scars" (pages 174-177) we learn about a ritual from Sudan that symbolizes becoming a man in Kek's tribe. Why do you think Kek is so upset that he "will never have the gaar?" Ganwar tells him the scars mean nothing in America, but Kek is still very upset. Kek also tells Ganwar he doesn't think he has shown himself to be brave, Ganwar disagrees. Do you think Kek has shown bravery, yes or no? Explain your thinking. Use examples from the story to support your answer.

Make sure to answer the question in a RAD response and use details from the text to support your answer. Please check your conventions before you submit and type it in your blogging doc first.

  1. Why Kek is upset about never getting a gaar is because back in his former country (Sudan) a gaar was a great honor to have and a scar to show knowledge of the world. It was a thing that Kek wanted the most but left behind. He also is upset because Ganwar had a gaar and so did his brother Laul and father so he feels like he is not relaying the honor and feels like he is losing a connection to his family and forgetting his culture.I think Kek has shown bravery because in the camp when the men with guns came he did not want to leave his mom to die and didn’t want to leave her. He was also brave not to cry but to stop others from crying so they would not reveal their location in the woods.

  2. I think Kek is sad he doesn’t have the gaar because he thinks that if he doesn’t get the scar he is not a brave man. I think Kek has shown bravery because he wants to go back to find his mom even if there's a war on in the book. Another way Kek shows bravery is when he is in his new school and he wasn’t scared, and he wasn’t scared to make new friends.

  3. Why do you think Kek is so upset: Why I think Kek is upset is because he has never gotten a chance to show/prove himself to his tribe because of the terrorists that attacked his village. Why I think this is because in the book Ganwar said “you don’t need a knife too the hand by the elder to be a man”. But what Ganwar really means is you don’t need to have your hand cut too show you’re brave. Also what Ganwar means “you don’t need the gaar is like you don’t need the fierceness to be a man or like you don’t need to be tough too have loyalty to be a brave or bold man.” I think Kek has shown bravery because he is in a new town and he has a school full of different faces and he didn’t even mind. I would be very scared being at a new school and having a life that was ruined because of the terrorists that attacked his village and him running away from the fight even though he was a little bit scared that to me is true bravery.

  4. Kek is upset about not getting a gaar because that is a symbol of manhood and Kek doesn't know when he is a man. Kek is also, upset because he want’s to be Kek has shown bravery by going to the camp by himself and coming to the U.S.A. Plus, he wasn't afraid to go to Lou’s house and ask for the job, going to school for the first time, and not crying if he is made fun of.

  5. I think Kek is upset that he doesn’t have the gaar is because he doesn't have manhood. Gaar means manhood in Sudan. This shows that you are a man and he will not forget the scars and move past it so he thinks he’s no man. He won’t forget the scars because they’re the only thing to remember his family by. I think that Kek has shown bravery because he never gives up. Like when he lost his family but then tried to stay optimistic that shows bravery in a very strong way.
